Today’s Passage: Luke 22:1-46

For me, it can be easy to overcommit. I can be carried away with the excitement of the moment. I have friends who do a much better job thinking through just exactly what they may, or may not, commit to.

In other words, before you commit to being passionate for a cause, or a person—make sure you are sold out on the purpose.

I believe that as Jesus closed his eyes, he could see what lay ahead that night. Yet here he is, on the night before he died for us, giving us the Lord’s Supper. Beyond the denominational and doctrinal controversy surrounding this meal, I find it remarkable when I pause and think how many times Jesus’ followers have, through the ages, done this in remembrance of him.

While Jesus can see what lay ahead, the fact that he knows his purpose positions him for full commitment. He will indeed display his passion for each of us.

The disciples, on the other hand, are not in the same position. Peter proclaims he is ready and others argue about their greatness, all while betrayal hangs in the air.

Hindsight is 20/20. My comments, however, are less directed at the disciples and more meant for me. My heart and mind want to be fully committed to Jesus. To persevere requires I drink deeply of God’s purpose.
