Today’s Passage: Luke 2:39–52

People at times express curiosity with the life of young Jesus. We get one little snippet in this part of the text. Remarkably, at this young age Jesus is already talking about doing his Father’s will—which will be his constant refrain.

The Gospels specifically do not talk about Jesus’ childhood. The point of a Gospel is not to be a biography of Jesus. A Gospel is Good News. That Good News is that God has come to save us—and that salvation comes with the birth, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus. (It is not a Gospel without the Cross and Resurrection.) That Good News has been promised through the ages.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let me ask: are you curious? Curious about why Zechariah, Mary, Elizabeth, Simeon, and Anna, and even Elizabeth’s baby, are jumping for joy?

They are jumping for joy because they know who Jesus is. Not because they know of him as a child. No, they know him as the one the Old Testament has spoken of for millennia. God’s Word created a sense of hope, expectation, and curiosity. I pray that as you read Luke’s Gospel, you are becoming curious.

Curious about this One who has come to do the Father’s will? We meet him in the Old Testament in so many places.
